Thanks and Disclaimer
jScompass was created starting in February, 2009 out of my frustration at not having a good, reliable compass replacement in There. Many other compass replacements existed, all based on the original compass, created by Bedicus, but they each had little problems with different things. I started out making one small change to one of them, which was to fix the /cm command that wasn’t reliable. After that, I was hooked, and began to see how far I could take things. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to learn much about computers and scripting that I never would have had any interest in otherwise.
As a disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with There or Makena Technologies, and they do not endorse jScompass. Use of jScompass is at your own risk. While its extremely unlikely the compass could ever have a bug that did anything worse then simply crash There, I will not be responsible if anything happens. Of course the compass would never do that on purpose, but jScompass is an extremely long and complicated script, and like any script it has bugs. I try to squash these bugs as quickly as I can, and always want to hear of any you’ve encountered. Especially when the There client updates, it is typically impossible for me to be sure it will work under all scenarios, since the client it depends on has possibly changed things. I do update the compass often, to eliminate bugs and keep up with the newest changes to the There client. While most upgrades are optional, from time to time I do shut off older versions of the compass, so please try to stay reasonably current. In some cases, I may have to shut off versions sooner then I would normally, so please do not complain about that. However, if you’re having trouble getting an upgrade to install, please contact me as shown here. jScompass is not intended to harass or grief people in There or in any way violate the Terms of Service of There or any law, including copyright infringement in the case of vecollections. Please keep all use of video clips to within the confines of content you own or “fair use” as determined by the laws of California, New York, and your location. jScompass is provided pursuant to a license agreement that you accept when installing the software. Please read and understand this agreement, which changes from time to time. I reserve the right to revoke your license to use jScompass at any time, especially if you are found violating its terms.
I would like to thank Bedicus for his inclination toward offering me an agreement to distribute a derivative version of his compass back in May. While that didn’t work out, and my skills are much better for it, his attitude towards me during those discussions is extremely appreciated. In addition, I am thankful for his contributions, and others, to the There Wiki which have been a real help in implementing jScompass. I would also like to thank all of my testers, especially danielboy11 who has contributed substantially to finding bugs across many versions of the compass. I would also like to thank everyone who has provided ideas, complaints, suggestions, or needed help using jScompass. Your feedback has helped to make the compass better, both by eliminating bugs and adding new features. Thank you very much. I also want to thank tablatronix and Myrmex, who created and kept updated the GPS panel that has become the de-facto standard throughout There, and BtSt for creating the GPSD which is used by many engaged in long-distance foot and vehicle races. These are great tools.
jScompass is and always will be free to use. I have a lot of fun on There, and besides doing IG duties, this is another way I choose to give back to the community. I just hope you like it and it makes your experience on There a little better. As my costs involved in hosting the jScompass servers have increased, I am now accepting donations. If you would like to donate, I have a tip jar available inside the clubhouse at this teleport: http://webapps.prod.there.com/goto/goto?obj=108556484. You can also reach this clubhouse by typing /jsoffice using jScompass in There.
